There is no good time to venture into freelance design than the present. Many businesses are waking up to the need of professional branding materials increasing the demand for talented and skilled designers. Regrettable though, most of the designers have focused their efforts on active employment and the freelance rend to use proactive marketing each time they need to get new clients.

This is rather appalling, given that you can have the clients look for you and not you go hunting for them if you decided take your time and build a freelancer designer brand. If this has always been your interest but you have never had a clear way of how to build your freelance designer brand, here is how to do it without spending a lot of time or money for marketing.

Create a website or a blog

The first process in building a freelance designer brand is to a create website or have a personal blog. Through the blog, you will have an easy medium to share you work with the entire world and those interested in your services will also have an easy way of getting in touch with you. In the blog, you should not just provide a portfolio of all the works you have done, but also remember to offer useful design tips that will make potential customers perceive you as a highly skilled designer and be ready and willing to buy your gigs.

It is true that you can have your portfolio hosted in other several places on the internet, but having your blog will set you apart from the rest of the designers and portray you as a real and serious professional. Besides, you will have total control over the use of the blog and you can used it for other things like showcasing your design videos, which may be possible with the other third party portfolio websites.

Take advantage of the wider design community

The wider online design community is another place to consider when building your freelance designer brand. These communities bring together designers of all levels and from different parts of the world. They can be a source for clients since most the clients usually head over to such places looking of the right designers to do their works.

With the online design communities, you need to establish yourself as a trusted authority so that you can get the attention of your peers as well that of the potential clients. You should share some of your best work in the community. Not only this, but also you need to participate actively by taking part in the discussions going on, offering helpful tips and engaging with other members.

You should however avoid all temptations to be a bother like spamming or commenting on every thread or post. Such behaviour might work against you as you try to build your freelance designer brand.

Let your work be seen across other channels

In building a freelance designer brand, the objective is to position yourself strategically so that you can attract quality design clients. You should therefore strive to get your works out to as many channels as possible. In addition to your website and the online design communities, think about other places where you can get exposure.

For instance, you can create account with all the social media channels to help increase the exposure on your projects which will ultimately help you get more clients. But while using the various channels, it is imperative to maintain uniformity for the sake of building a uniform freelance designer brand.

Use the freelancing websites

Many skilled designers tend to shun the freelancing websites in the process of building a freelance designer brand. But these online workplaces can offer a great launch pad for your career as a freelance designer. A lot of people who need design services usually flock to the freelancing websites in search of potential designers. By being present in such sites therefore, you increase your exposure to lots of quality clients.

Additionally, most of the freelancing websites have a review system where customers can post either positive or negative reviews depending on the services they received. If you can maintain to get consistent positive reviews, it will be only a matter of time before you swarmed with orders from people seeking your services. Therefore, you should never bypass the freelancing website when building your freelance designer brand.

Introduce a value-added Giveaway

Using incentives is another powerful method you can employ in building your freelance designer brand. You can promise to offer value added complimentary services for every gig purchased from you. For instance, if someone orders a logo design, you can promise to offer them a free business card design as a giveaway. You are not just giving them something for free, but whatever you offer them will add real value to their business.

As you try to build your freelance designer brand, it is important to remember that it takes time and effort to have the brand off its feet. Be ready to do the hard work now and you will reap the benefits later on when your freelance designer brand will be doing all the marketing for you.

The process of building a brand requires a multidimensional approach owing to its complex nature and the various parameters involved. A logo is not a brand neither is the brand a logo. Due to this fact, logo alone is not sufficient to build a brand. However, a logo is very instrumental in branding. It is the visual representation of the brand’s products or services to the potential clients.

It is the first interaction between the company and their clients hence it is imperative that it be of good quality and have the ability to not only attract attention but also create the desired response from the target audience. All these are important for the successful branding of the business. But if a logo is rejected by the customers or the potential clients, branding would be an uphill task which might never be achieved unless a more acceptable logo is used.

For successful branding, there are other essential elements which must be incorporated and used together with the logo. In the absence of these elements, no worthwhile branding results will ever be achieved even if you had the most beautiful logo in the universe. These other essential elements needed to build a brand include but are not limited to the following.

Audience Acknowledgment

Branding becomes easy and will have more chances of being successful if the business has a good understanding of the demographics of their target audience, their interests as well as the best ways to communicate with them. It is not feasible, and it doesn’t make any sense to target just anybody in the market. To build a brand, the knowledge of the audience is important to enable you to come up with the right marketing campaigns as well as the appropriate tone for the campaigns which will help in defining the overall identity of the brand. Consequently, it will be easy to forge a human and organic connection between the business and the target market.

Uniqueness

For you to establish a successful brand identity, you not only need a unique logo but also you must be offering something distinctive from what the rest have in the market. For example, Apple has managed to build a strong brand worldwide due to their innovative products which are also minimalist and aesthetically appealing. Domino Pizza on the other hand built a strong brand based on their guarantee that their pizza would arrive in thirty minutes, or it would be free.

For a business to have a successful brand identity in the industry, it is not a must that it must come up with a revolutionary idea. All that is needed to be unique is to offer to the market something special and different from what the competition is offering. If a business has the ability to figure out how they can be different from the rest, they will have given their audience a reason to choose them and bypass the competition hence helping in building the business brand.

Long term relationship with customers

It is difficult to build a brand because it is a continuous process that might take months or even years. Ideally, a brand should continue growing and there should never reach a point where it can be said that the brand can no longer grow. Since it is a continuous process, it is essential for the business to consider means and ways of establishing long-term relationships with the clients. The best way to achieve this is to meet the expectations of the customers every time and never make promises that the business cannot fulfill. Eventually, the clients will learn to trust the business and will feel part of it, and this will contribute to the eventual growth of the brand.

Consistency

Just as you are consistent with the logo and other marketing materials across the various marketing platforms, this kind of uniformity should be visible in all the other areas of the business. For instance, whenever clients come back for products or services, you should maintain not only the quality of what you are giving them but also maintain the experience with which you offer them. As clients, they will expect the same level of products and services if not an improvement each time they come, and if this slacks for any reason, they are likely to go away. With such a kind of consistency, building a strong brand will just be a matter of time.

Be creative with the brand message

Avoid the temptation to repeat the same brand message over and over again but strive to have diversity in the message in a manner that will not distort the intended meaning. Additionally, there is no point of stamping the logo on everything that comes to mind. This used to work in the past but is now deprecated and some customers might find it to be rather annoying. Once again, remember that a brand is not a logo and vice versa.

How to be Unique without Being Bizarre

The current graphics design industry is full of what many professional designers have termed as “noise”. Many designers, especially the newly inducted ones, are in a hurry to complete unique designs, even if it means breaking all the design principles. With the superfluity of readily available design tools and a lot of learning materials, most designers have gotten it all wrong and ended up with designs that are purely bizarre.

This is when they refuse to follow the already laid down principles and try to be unique in all the wrong ways. However, it is good to experiment with your designs, provided that you don’t go overboard and ruin the whole design. Here is how you can be unique in this turbulent industry without necessarily churning out weird designs-:

Always be simple

If you want to be unique without being bizarre, then you will always strive to achieve simplicity in your designs. A beautiful logo isn’t one that has used seven fonts, five styles, and nine colors. When creating any graphic, it is important to have the ultimate goal in mind. A good graphic should be clear and have the ability to pass the central marketing message effectively to the target audience.

A glance at all the world major brands will reveal to you that they have very simple logos and simple marketing graphics. To confirm this, have a look at Coca-cola, Apple, IBM, Google to mention just a few.

Don’t Always Follow Trends

Never be a trend follower in graphics design if you want to avoid coming up with bizarre designs. If you are fond of following trends, you may find yourself with very weird designs that you implemented trying to conform to a fad. Instead, stick to basic principles of design, since these never change and your logo will be relevant years after the trend is long gone.

Less is always more

The less is always more concept has proven to be such a strong pillar in all the great designs you will ever come across. With this concept, you don’t have to include everything on the design you are working on. It suggests that you stick only to the core components of the design and keep away from the things that are likely to divert the viewer’s attention. Remember, you have a very small window of opportunity to grab the attention of the user with the design, and the more complicated your design is, the faster they will get distracted and fail to get the message your design is conveying.

Don’t overdo with the colors

Wrong use of the color palettes will make you produce bizarre graphic designs. It is imperative that as a graphic designer, you have a thorough understanding of the graphic design color theory so that you know which colors to use, when and how to use them.

Most of the weird designs are usually as a result of the designers trying to be overly creative with the colors. Hence, be careful with your use of colors if you want to be unique without being bizarre. Exercise a lot of moderation when dealing with the colors.

Never Copy

It goes without saying that your logo will always be bizarre if you become a copy cat and decide to imitate other designer’s works. Originality is one of the things that will make you as well as your designs unique. There are a plethora of places to get inspiration from and copying other people’s work should never cross your mind. It is not only unethical but also, it raises serious questions about your competency as a graphics designer. Therefore, stick to being original at all times and you will always end up with unique designs without producing bizarre designs.

Customized Designs

Every design project you undertake should always be customized to meet specific goals and also directed to a particular audience. By offering customized designs, you eliminate all chances of not being unique, which in most cases leads to unusual designs.

Understand the meaning of the design

If you are unable to explain in simple terms what the logo is all about, then there is no way you will avoid making bizarre designs. As the designer, you need to have a clear thought process in coming up with the design, so that you understand all symbols and their meanings. In this manner, you stand a better chance of bringing out the marketing message without causing any confusion to those who will be using or seeing the logo.

Use special effects sparingly

Overusing special effects is another reason many designers come up with bizarre designs. As much as you want to use the special effects to create a unique design, you must exercise sobriety, or else you end up ruining everything. As a rule of thumb, if you feel that your design must have special effects to be complete, then you have failed in the design. A good logo should look great without the addition of any special effects. However, if you must use such effects, then remember to use them sparingly.

10 Tips for Creating Killer Logo Designs

There is more to creating a company’s visual identity than just placing the name and some funny symbols then calling it a logo. The recent times have seen the demand for graphic designers go up since businesses have realized the immense need to have killer logo designs. A logo is a company’s first impression and will in most cases determine the future interaction between the customer and company.

It is out of the logo that the customer will develop a perception of the brand, make a purchase decision and have an overall attitude regarding the given products or services. If you are an aspiring designer, who wants to establish a stellar reputation of coming up with killer logo designs, then here are some tips to help in the long and tortuous but very rewarding journey:

You have to be unique and clever

If you want to come up with a killer logo design, you have no option but to be unique and ingenious in the design. It is the aspiration of the designer as well as the client to have a unique logo that will set apart the business from the competition and make it stand out in the crowd. As a designer, therefore, you must think out of the box and come up with unique designs that are likely not to have been used anywhere else.

Have a thorough understanding of the brand

You cannot come up with a killer logo design if you don’t have a thorough knowledge of the business and the brand. As a designer, you need to find out more about the company with the aim of understanding its values and principles, core strengths, the target audience, unique position in the market amongst others then incorporate all these in the design to come up with a killer logo.

Use the power of colors

The target audience for the logo is normal people just like you and me, and since humans are visual beings, our response to colors is very distinct. Therefore, when thinking about creating a killer logo design, you must use colors appropriately to capture the attention and the imagination of the audience as well as pass the main marketing message effectively.

The name or symbol

A logo essentially consists of two major components: the symbol and the business name. It has been proven every time and again that some of the best logo designs feature either one of the two elements. Before you begin to cram the design with all manner symbols and letters, think about using either the business name or the symbol for the logo. In this regards, consider top logos like Nike, Coca-cola, IBM, Apple, Yahoo, Google just to mention a few.

Be simple and flexible

Current trends in graphic designs suggest that killer logo designs are rather simple and flexible. You can think about using negative space or white space to introduce simplicity while at the same time making the logo look attractive and effective to the target audience. Good example of logos that thrives on simplicity and flexibility is the FedEx logo and Amazon logo.

Start with black and white for the design

The best way to enhance versatility and end up with a killer logo design is to avoid using colors at the beginning of the design. Starting with black and white on the other hand allows you to focus more on the shape, and the concept and you may add color later on once you are satisfied with the design.

Always have the target audience in mind

You won’t manage to create a killer logo design unless you know the target audience. You need to put yourself in the shoes of the target audience and ask yourself what they would like to see in a logo belonging to such a business. In this manner, you will be a good position to choose other design elements that will allow you to come up with killer logo designs.

Use the internet and online resources for inspiration

The internet is full of different logo designs and lots of resources available at your disposal in the creation of a killer logo design. This is not to imply that you imitate a great logo you have seen in the internet but rather use it to brainstorm and refine your ideas of coming up with the killer logo design.

Perfection comes with time

Finally, as you strive to develop the skills to come up with killer logo designs, you must have in mind that it takes time, and you may not get it right the first time. However, you must never quit but instead keep on practicing so that you can improve your designs with time. Always be sure to improve continuously your knowledge by every available resource at your disposal.
