Creating a logo that will stand the test of time is no mean feat, let alone restricting yourself to using text or typography alone. But most remarkable ideas and brilliant solutions have been achieved by getting down to the bare essentials of graphics design. In some occasions, it is a nicely designed ligature that finally nails it or sometimes it is the imaginative use of letters. In other occasions still, stellar logos come from the clever use of colors, rearranging letters, or removing an item from the logotype to introduce an intelligent twist.

A closer look at some of the famous logos in the world will reveal to you that typography logos can be some of the best. This is not to say that all good logos must be designed with letters alone, but merely suggesting that a logo can still be of good quality without the addition of fancy symbols or characters. Here are of the best typography logos recognized in the whole world due to their effectiveness and prowess in branding which has led to the immense success of the various brands.

The CNN Logo

CNN is a leading American cable news channel headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It is one of the most popular and influential news houses in the world and to accompany such a glittering description is an equally powerful logo. The CNN logo enjoys a reputation of having a powerful and timeless design, making it one of the most recognizable and memorable logos in the world. The logo was the work of Antony Guy in 1980, and it was designed for a reported fee of $2,800.

The logo essentially is a typography logo, featuring standalone letter mark of the name of the company written in a strong and rounded typeface. The uniqueness of the logo reflects the dominance, stability, and reliability of the network. The red color symbolizes passion and courage while the white color is a show of perfection, authority, truth, and supremacy.

The FedEx Logo

The FedEx logo also makes it to the list of the best typography logos. This logo is not just a great typography logo, but it comes with an appropriate hidden meaning which is a display of the professionalism and creativity that was used in its design. If you look at the logo keenly, you will discover how white space has been used to create an arrow between the letters E and X. The arrow signifies that the company is keen on moving forward and is also looking into the future.

The Sony Logo

Sony is a world acclaimed Japanese conglomerate dealing in a wide range of electronics, motion pictures, as well as offering a myriad of financial services. Ever since the conglomerate started operations way back in 1957, they have maintained typography logo, and this has worked wonders for their marketing and branding needs.

Though with minor changes along the way, the typography logo has maintained its core goal, which was to communicate strength and simplicity. The color of the logo, which is predominantly black on a white background, serves to represent excellence, elegance as well as the iconic history of the conglomerate.

The Google Logo

The Google Logo is a perfect example of a typography logo, featuring a simple yet powerful design. Ever since the start of the company in 1996, the logo has gone a number of modifications, but it has never deviated from the typography style. The logo displays the use of primary colors, but not in their natural order, and it also incorporates a secondary color with the letter in the design.

According to the designer of the logo, this was done on purpose to illustrate that Google does not follow the rules and is only concerned with giving the best search experience on the internet. We are yet to see another typography logo that became popular and successful as the Google logo.

The Dell Logo

Dell is a renowned computer technology firm with the name of its founder, Michael Dell. The famous typography logo was the work of Siegel + Gel, a global strategic branding agency that was tasked with the job in 1984. The fame of the logo can be attributed to the slanted letter E, which was inspired by Dell’s desire to turn the world on its ear. The blue color of the logo represents intelligence, trustworthiness, loyalty and confidence in the company products.

The HP Logo

A discussion about the top typography logos will not be complete without mentioning the hp logo. This is another American multinational corporation with strong footprints in information technology. Since the company began its operations, the logo has not seen any major changes and is still characterized by the two letters as the abbreviations of the name of the company. The colors of the logo are blue and white to signify its simplicity and sophistication. It also shows the solemn approach that the company has when doing business.

Beautiful Logos with Just One Color

The world we live in is a bright, busy and a fast moving one. Wherever we go, we are surrounded with several colors, and so the majority of people find multi-colored logos to be the most appealing. But this is not to insinuate that beautiful logos must always have multiple colors. If anything, most of the top brand logos in the world have only one color, and they appear to be deceptively simple yet, they have been a strong component in the branding endeavors of the respective companies.

Though they appear to be simple and easy to understand, single color logos have been proven to communicate the brand message concisely, and they become very effective in doing so when they are combined with expert design skills. Since they are just one color, they are easy to remember; hence, they create a permanent imprint on the minds of those who see it. Due to this, they become active brand ambassadors, thus aiding in the marketing efforts of the company and the ultimate success of the brand.

Careful observation on some of the world leading brands will reveal to you that they are either made from simple symbols, or they use just one color. Presented below are a few of such logos and a demonstration of the prowess that one logo designs can have.

IBM Logo

IBM has without a doubt created one of the world’s most beautiful logos. The logo features horizontal stripes which signify the speed and the dynamism of the company’s products and services. The logo is simple, attractive and captivating at the same time. It is an all blue logo, and it has been used by the corporate giant to define the brand and the quality of the products. Besides, the single color blue represents the company’s superiority, confidence, uniqueness and the critical roles it plays in revolutionizing the Information Technology Industry.

The Coca-Cola Logo

The coca-cola logo is another demonstration of how one color logo can be effective in marketing the brand of a product. Though the logo has undergone a number of transformations from the initial design by John S Pemberton in 1886, the concept has always revolved around the use of just one color and a contrasting one in the background. The initial logo featured the typeface written in black against a white background while the present has the letters written in red against a white background. So famous is the logo that you will never miss to recognize it no matter the part of the world you find it.

Twitter Logo

Twitter is only a few years old and has completely revolutionized the concept of social network in the world. One of the things that can be attributed to the success of the social network is its strength in branding in which the logo played a huge role. This is another one color logo design, which is not only beautiful but laden with a lot of relevant meanings. The logo features a bird, which has now come to be known as the Twitter bird; it has a beak and a body pointing upwards towards the sky. According to Bowman, the Twitter logo represents hope, freedom and limitless opportunity with regards to the social media.

The Samsung Logo

The Samsung logo also makes it to the list of the best one color logos. The blue colored logo is not just simple, but also elegantly designed in a beautiful color .It works so well for the corporate organization.

Bass Logo

The Bass Breweries has entrenched its name down the books of history as one of the oldest and most renowned breweries in the world. Founded in 1777, Bass is one of the largest beer producers in the world with a capacity to produce up to one million barrels annually. But apart from the age and the immense popularity of Bass, the logo is another thing worth taking note of and which has done a great job in promoting the brand worldwide. It is a one color logo design, with the characteristic triangle and the name of the company written beneath it. Being in color red, the logo is strong, distinct and easily memorable, thus giving it all the features a super logo needs to have.

The Nike Logo

The Nike Logo, commonly known as the Swoosh comprises of two simple curved lines and it is the simplest logo imaginable, but it carries billions of dollars worth of marketing and branding associations. At its most basic meaning, the swoosh represents speed and motion – fundamental attributes in the sporting world where the brand has found a home. But the deeper meaning of the logo can be traced back to the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, who is believed to have influenced thousand of brave warriors. The name “Swoosh” came about to refer to the fibers used in manufacturing the Nike Shoes. Definitely, this is a one color logo that will remain effective for a long time, and is in the list for the most beautiful logos.

These are just, but a few of the one color logo designs illustrating that a logo must not just be multicolored. Other one color logos, that are also beautiful logos, which are also world leading brands include Apple, Yahoo, Skype, Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Target amongst others.

10 Great Nonprofit Logos Used Around the World

Just because you’re running a nonprofit that doesn’t mean you should skimp on a logo. While money can be extremely tight for nonprofit services, it’s still extremely important that you have a marketable brand. In order for people to hear about your nonprofit organization and provide donations or support you need to be a professional company. With the help of a professional logo design you can really make an impact in your marketplace and generate interest. Remember that your logo will be finding its way to event posters, on your corporate literature and more. Here are 10 of the greatest nonprofit logos available that you can use for inspiration in your own nonprofit logos.

Girl scouts of the USA:

The girl scouts of the USA have been around over many years. Their simple lowercase logo symbolizes not only the original Clover symbol that the organization has used for many years on their merit badges, cookies and other products but also mentorship. The big sister little sister mentor position in this company has always been a big aspect of their non-profit and this is now symbolized in the most updated version of the Girl Scout logo.

The Humane society of the United States:

The United States Humane Society has always been one of the most supported charities in the USA. In a recent redesign of the Humane Society logo they worked to form a map of the US with some of the most popular animals that they care for almost every day. This heartwarming and all encompassing logo is simple but also extremely effective at making its message heard. The company went on to recently created a Humane Society international logo as well which showcases a globe and some more exotic animals that their international locations cater to.

PBS:

It is extremely difficult to forget about the public broadcasting station and its iconic logo. The PBS logo has been roughly unchanged since the beginning of the channel. While PBS relies on donations to keep afloat, they produced a strong logo that can be used in a wide array of marketing campaigns and that’s highly recognizable.

Red campaign:

The red campaign for HIV and Aids as an extremely powerful logo. We have seen this symbol across U2 albums, events, Apple commercials and more. The red campaign owes some of that success to a simple and effective logo that has remained unchanged through the duration of the program. With effective logos like this, nonprofits can really market their cause with pride.

Stand up to cancer:

Stand up to cancer utilizes extremely readable text as well as a simple logo design. This campaign to collect funds for cancer research has been going for number of years and the logo combines modern features with a subtle use of color. Overall this is an extremely bold logo that captures attention and really ignites people to donate. This is an iconic nonprofit logo that will be around for many years to come.

WWF:

The WWF panda is one of the most recognizable nonprofit logos in the world. The simple black and white logo features a panda bear as well as a unique typeface. The logo has remained mostly unchanged over the years but the brand did encounter some trouble with the world wrestling Federation a few years past. The world wildlife foundation won its suit and kept the name rights for their charity. This simple black and white logo will most likely be continuing on into the future as the main logo of the WWF.

The YMCA:

The YMCA did a recent rebrand that shows extreme promise. The y’s logo remained fairly simple and unchanged since the beginning of the organization. Today however it has a modern rebrand with a new logo design. The red and yellow Y logo is iconic and perfect for the fun recreational organization.

One drop:

One drop is a world water charity that showcases the importance of sustainable water around the world. There are several versions of the logo, one of which includes many drops of water in one large drop of water as well as one large drop of water. The 1 drop logo is very modern and a bit eye opening as well. It really shows you the value of just one small drop of water and how it could help communities around the world. One drop makes you think of conservation as well as donation to make the world a better place.

American Red Cross:

The Red Cross is one of the most recognizable worldwide medical/ support charities. The red cross alone as well as the simple gray text are recognizable in many different languages and designed for maximum visibility. Although the Red Cross has undergone some newer rebranding, the elements of their nonprofit logos remain the same.

American diabetes Association:

The American diabetes Association has had the same nonprofit logo over many decades. The A and stepping stone configuration in red as well as the modern text make this logo standout in advertising and more.

Auto Logos That are Iconic in Their Own Ways

There are a number of recognizable logos throughout the auto manufacturing world. Although there are definitely some logos that stand out amongst the crowd. Here are some of our top favorite iconic auto logos. Many of these logos have been around for many decades and you can find a good number of them in your local supermarket parking lot. Here are our top 8 iconic auto logos:

Mercedes Benz:

This is probably one of the simplest iconic auto logos. German carmakers have some of the longest running history in the automobile world and Mercedes Benz has one of the longest-running logos as well. Most German carmakers use simplicity for their logos and Mercedes has followed suit with a logo that hasn’t been changed across many decades. With no signs of changing any time soon, we should continue to see the Mercedes benz logo on sport/luxury cars.

Volvo:

The Volvo logo not only is built within an old chemical symbol for iron but it also has an change for many years. This Swedish carmaker has had the iconic blue and silver badge for decades and it is a simple yet historic construction. Not only does the logo and name mean “I roll” in latin but incorporates many classic design elements. Volvo has a dependable logo for one the most iconic auto logos.

Cadillac:

The Cadillac logo is somewhat similar to that of Porsche because it utilizes a family crest style logo as well as some similar coloring. Cadillac has an extensive history and the logo has changed just a little bit over time embracing a simpler style. While you can see smaller ducks in the old-style Cadillac crest, today the company has a much more modern look for their crest style logo. The caddy badge is extremely respected amongst auto logos. It has a classic luxury look and it is perhaps one of the most noble looking auto logos out of any of the competition. Although it may not be as simple as some of the other logos from auto makers, it is one of the most iconic auto logos.

Mini:

Although Mini is technically owned by BMW these days, they have kept a modern version of their Iconic auto logo. The Mini logo has simple block lettering as well as a set of wings that you might see on an air force badge. It is a simple yet instantly recognizable logo from an automaker. It actually has some deep meaning as well and the designers wanted to create a winged sun. This symbol is based off of an ancient religious symbol that was meant to showcase the transportation method of a perfect soul. The wings that carried souls to the sun can now be found on every mini.

Infiniti:

When Nissan went out to create a luxury version of their vehicles with Infiniti they certainly didn’t disappoint when it came to the logo. The Infiniti logo is far more than just a simple circle with a peak. It’s also certainly not an upside down silver pacman. Instead this symbol is joined in one line to symbolize the car traveling towards infinity on an open road. The peak in the center is the infamous Mount Fuji in japan which pays tribute to the history and development of the car. This history and thought makes Infiniti one of the coolest auto logos.

BMW:

No list of auto logos would be complete without BMW. This simple and easy to recognize logo was once found on airplanes and airplane engines. This is where the colors blue and white come from. Because BMW used to build these products and paint many of the manufacturer colors so that aircraft technicians could tell when the propellers were spinning, these colors just stuck. The logo that they eventually picked was supposed to resemble the propellers of an aircraft spinning against blue sky. With the chrome BMW placed above the target or propellers the logo was complete.

Volkswagen:

It seems that there is a trend in our list for German auto logos. VW originally designed its logo in the year 1938 giving it an extensive history. The design has been modified slightly in year 1996 as well as in the year 2000. The only difference between the modern version of the Volkswagen logo and the older version is a slightly different color blend as well as 3d elements. Ultimately the logo remains basically unchanged since the start of World War II.

Audi:

You can spot an Audi logo from a mile away and considering the type of speedy cars that this company makes it will come up on you fast as well. The Audi logo is designed to symbolize unity just the same as the Olympic logo. The logo was created in 1932 as a result of four independent auto companies joining together. It has remained unchanged since that original logo design and that makes it one of the most iconic on this list.

Why you should avoid over complicating any design

There are a number of big reasons why you should avoid overcomplicating a traditional logo design. Logos are designed to be simple and to follow basic rules. Adding too many touches or making a logo difficult to understand can only lead to issues when comes to representing your brand and for resonating with your target audience. An overcomplicated design can be bad for many different reasons and is something that every designer needs to avoid. Here are some of the top reasons why you should avoid overcomplicated any design:

Legibility:

With too many different typefaces for example or too much going on a logo this leads to a design that simply can’t be read or interpreted by anyone. Making sure that your design remains legible is extremely important. Without a logo that can be read quickly you could be missing out on a large number of followers and customers. Logos need to be designed in order to be seen a million times as well as read in just a few seconds. Over complicating designs with large text, too many typefaces or many different words that are uniquely shaped can be absolutely overwhelming. Rather than using this tactic spree for simplicity and simple readability. This is the best way to make sure that your message is received well.

Keep the length of lines short:

If you are writing any type of promotional content or forming a web design you need to make sure to keep all of your lines short and readable. Especially for landing pages and promotional content you need to make sure that the block text for any line only reaches around six words per line. This is comfortable for most people to read in a simple pass. Any of your print materials or print design should foll if ow this rule as blocks of a larger format will simply be ignored. If you really want to convey a message with your design you need to avoid all of the lines in your content and keep your design structured well and kept uniform.

Plan the order of messages:

When producing print material, a web design or even a logo design it’s very important to have a purposeful list of where to draw the customers eye. Making sure that the emphasis words are placed on top and actually planning at the order that you use for your text blocks and titles is extremely important to designing something that is simple. Really think about the way that you want to draw your readers eye and the type of information that you would like to present. If your design doesn’t follow any uniform pattern people are all going to read it and interpreted very differently. Rather than going with a design that is extremely complicated, always have a hierarchy and a planned order for your messages.

Work on your spacing:

Spacing in a logo design and spacing in all of the content on your webpages also extremely important. Dealing with spacing in text is an inevitability of design and without the appropriate word spacing between text and objects a page will just appear unprofessional. The easiest way to check your word spacing is to see if a lowercase “i” could fit between each of the word spaces in your logo or print text design. Also make sure that the alignment is correct for drawing the eye across text boxes. With many different text elements and graphic elements in a design you still need to focus on spacing. By introducing more and more of these objects into your design however it can make spacing an absolute nightmare.

Check a grid:

If you are designing anything in adobe indesign for example you can quickly check on a grid to see if all of the elements on your page are well aligned. Using this grid is one of the best ways that you can check the spacing between various text and image objects across the page. This invisible grid can be displayed in many different ways and help you to adjust everything from logos, to web design to print promotions. A grid is a great way to see if you have an overcomplicated design because it can help you to see if you have too many elements on page.

Stick to a palette:

Having a color palette and sticking to it is one of the biggest elements of preventing an overcomplicated design. With the help of a proper color palette you can stick to some color swatches through your entire logo designer webpage that will match up and be easy on the eyes. The big problem with using a number of different colors is that the content doesn’t appear uniform or easy to read.

Embrace space:

Many designers feel like they have to fill up white space in order to have a successful design. If almost every inch of white space gets filled up in the design process you can often end up with an overcomplicated design. Embrace blank space in your designs and use simplicity to share your message.

Choosing or pairing the right font for a logo design is usually a challenge to most designers, sometimes even the most experienced ones. It may be possible to use one or two fonts that will work well in your design, but there are no guarantees that they will collaborate to help you achieve the typographic aim you had.

But the process of choosing the right font for a logo should not always make you reach for your aspirin each time you design if you can understand the basics and always adhere to the rules. This is not to say that you should limit your creativity and stick to the rules at all the times, but using the tips given below will save you a lot of time and enhance your process of choosing the right font for a logo each time you sit down to design.

How many fonts should you use?

No strict rule restricts the number of fonts you can use in your design since there are a number of factors that comes into play when choosing the right font for your logo. But irrespective of the number of fonts you decide upon, you must have in mind the overall effects you want to achieve when the design is complete. Just like human beings, Fonts have personality, which might sometimes clash if you bring a lot of them together.

You are thus not limited by the number of fonts you can use in your logo design provided that you can manage to achieve harmony when using multiple fonts on the same design. If you will end up with a decorative and striking design, then go ahead and use as many fonts as you want but if you feel you can still use fewer fonts and still get stellar results, nothing stands in your way.

Whereas you are free to use whatever number of fonts you want in your logo, a quick glance at some of the best logos in the world will reveal to you that most of them prefer to stick with one font. By using a single font, they have a chance to send a strong marketing message to the consumer. If they have to use multiple fonts, then these will appear on their other advertising materials or in the logos of sub-brands of the same companies. For proven results, therefore, sticking to one font may be the right thing to do when choosing the right font for a logo design.

The Font Categories

Font category is another factor worth giving consideration when choosing the right font for a logo. The choice of a category should also be guided by the overall aims of the design as well as the particular effects you would want to achieve with the logo design. Once you have determined the objectives of your design, you will find it easy to choose a particular category that will work well for the project at hand.

Font Scale and Proportion

It is rewarding to pay close attention to scale, space and case when choosing the right font for a logo. This is especially important when you are considering using multiple fonts on the same logo design. It is imperative that all the fonts chosen for the design have congruency in terms of scale and proportion so that the final design may have strong overall coherence.

It is not a must that the fonts chosen must be identical in terms of scale and proportion, but you want to look for fonts that are nearly similar or fonts that are entirely different and which will make it easy and simple to create contrast in the logo design.

Use Fonts with Color or Style

Can you imagine using six different fonts, seven colors and four different styles on the same design? If the design is approved for final production, then whoever will be looking at it will have a tough time trying to find out what it is all about if they will have the grace to stick around for that long.

This is not to condemn you in using just a font with a single color or style, but you need to exercise sobriety and be careful not to overdo anything in the logo design. When choosing the right font for a logo, the recommendation as far as color goes is that, no matter the number of fonts chosen, you need to stick to colors in the same saturation or hue. This so that you can have the colors mesh rather than have them clashing on the same design.

On styles, you may have a little more flexibility when choosing the right font for a logo. However, the preferred style must make sense with the weight and emphasis created by the fonts.

Finally, choosing the right font for a logo is something you will be proficient at following a lot of practice and experience. You may get it wrong a couple of times in the beginning, but as you continue to do more designs, it will come second to nature in your designs.

When It Comes to Logo Design, Less is Better

The less is more design principle is becoming a strong trend lately in the spheres of logo design. It has come to the realization that simplicity leads to the creation of effective logo designs that will add immensely to the branding endeavors of the business and make it memorable to the clients for a long period.

The less is more principle would have been dismissed as another passing cloud, but if you see big companies and large corporations rebranding their logos to simpler ones, then you know that there are some serious undercurrents taking place. These companies spend fortunes in their branding and for them to revert to less is more logos, they must have done adequate research and are convinced that it is the best design approach to consider.

Netflix, PayPal, and Avery are some of the corporate giants who have demonstrated the effectiveness of applying the less is more design principle in logo design.

Why less is More Logo Design is Successful

It not in question that less is more in logo design has a lot of benefits as compared to cramming lots of graphics and wording in the same logo. Other than the aesthetic appeal created by such designs, here are some of the reasons why this concept is such a powerful one when it comes to the logos and overall branding for the company-:

Creates balance and harmony in the design

In the absence of balance and harmony, a logo design might lose coherence and fail to capture the attention of the viewers effectively. The less is more design principle is useful in creating a harmonious layout in the design and removes any unsteadiness, either in the text or the graphics to make the logo more visible and easily recognizable.

Improves readability

One of the benefits of applying the less is more design principle is that it greatly enhances the readability of the logo. Simplistic logos does not feature a lot of texts and images hence viewers can easily and quickly comprehend what the logo is all about.

Leads to creation of simple yet sophisticated and elegant designs

If you are observant, you will realize that the corporation that have rebranded using the less is more design principle are some of the giants in their respective industries. Cheap and local companies will in most cases have overly complicated logos. It is also evident that simplistic logos are simple, yet display a great deal of professionalism and elegance in the design.

Gives focus and emphasis on the subject

When less is more is applied in logo design, there are few elements of design used making the subject of the design get a lot of focus. This clarity is immensely useful in branding for any business. Again, the less is more principle in logo design helps in directing the viewer’s eye to the particular components of the design that requires the most attention. There are no distractions around to make the viewer deviate from seeing and understanding the message of the logo.

Useful for mobile application

Since the world is drifting towards e-commerce and the use of the internet to access various goods and services, companies and organizations need to have their content readily available to a number of mobile devices used to access the internet. The less is more design concept is responsive hence, it renders perfectly well in the mobile devices. It is important to have in mind that over half of the world population with access to the internet use mobile devices for browsing. Hence, less is more is ensuring that every person who visits the various sites get a good experience, irrespective of their devices.

Flatness for more quality

The less is more trend leans heavily towards “flatness” in the logos as well as other graphic designs. It eliminates shadows and blurs that are the normal culprits in making logos or other graphics unreadable.

Works well with photos

Photos are a huge consideration when it comes to logo design. Not every photo will render properly in mobile devices, and since companies want their contents accessible to such devices, simplicity in logo design has provided the much-needed solution. Whether or not a photo is used in the logo design, it is guaranteed that it will display perfectly well on all the devices.

Less is more is here to stay

Despite the fact that certain corporate organizations have tried to rebrand using the less is more design principle but failed, we can only expect that the trend will get more steam and might be the main thing in logo design. While doing it, however, it is important to remember not to be over simplistic to a point where the logo loses meaning and relevance.
