How to Design a successful App Logo

The success of an app depends not only on its usefulness but also on the marketing effort. It implies that for your app to get lots of downloads and be considered as a great app, it has to be of real value, and you must market it effectively. Once the development of the app is over, the next focus is usually on how you can get as many people as possible to download it and this is where marketing and finally the app logo comes in.

A successful logo for an app will make it stand out from the millions of the other apps in the marketplace. If the logo is mediocre, and it stands not to be noticed and even if the app was the best in the world, it won’t get its deserved share of the market. Presented here are a few tips to help you come up with a good app logo that will guarantee you a huge number of download ones the app is released-:

Reflect on the app

The design of a great app logo begins with an in-depth reflection on the app. This will form the basis upon which other design elements will be based. Of utmost consideration are what the apps is intended to achieve, the marketing message you need to pass around, the unique features it has over other similar apps in the app store, its color as well as the target audience. This reflection will let you know the best app logo design route to take so that you create a logo that will be in tandem with the expectations of the audience thus leading to general acceptance and success of the app.

Design on a unique and striking shape

One feature you will find in the icons of the most successful apps on the stores is their unique and striking shapes. The shape of the app icon is usually the central design element used to catch the attention of the eye and make people be aware of the app. To settle for the right shape of your app icon, you need to make it relevant to the applications which the app are intended to achieve. You are strongly advised never to use photos or images as the preferred shapes of your app icons since they don’t offer the versatility and uniqueness required of a good app.

Set the tone of the app

Getting the right tone is also instrumental in the successful development of an app logo. Remember, colors are a huge consideration when it comes to marketing and branding of your app, and you need to choose the right color palettes for your app carefully. Bring back your knowledge of the graphic design color theory and use the right colors that will pass the emotions as well as the message effectively to the target audience.

Apple advises that you should stick with a limited number of color palettes in your app design so that it remains clean, fresh, attractive and memorable in the minds of the target audience. Using lots of colors might end up making the app logo design to appear cluttered and even lose the intended meaning.

Add text, but only when possible

A closer look at most of the successful apps will reveal to you that they have distinct and unique shapes without any texts. The lesson drawn from this is that text is not necessary when designing an app logo. However, feel free to use text only when it is necessary. It further points back to the fact that you need to have a unique shape for your app icons so that it is easily recognizable and users can infer what its use by just looking at the symbol.

Don’t go with the trends

Just like in the fashion world, trends are very rife in the graphic design world. However, when designing an app logo, you should never base the design on current trends, however appealing it might be. You want your app to stand the taste of time and be relevant for many more years to come. This should not only be reflected in the development but also on the marketing and branding and so is the app icon design as well. Stick to the basics of logo design and create an app icon that will be relevant even after the current trends are long gone.

Keep it Simple

Finally, simplicity is very important in app logo design. There are millions of users looking to download various apps from the internet and they just have a few seconds to skim through the plethora of app icons and decide on which ones to download. The apps with simple icons will attract attention hence get more downloads while those with complex icons will be passed by the users leading to dismal downloads.

What is So Special about the New Google Logo?

Google, the giant tech company, unveiled a few major majors in the company towards the end of 2015 and to accompany the changes was an update on their logo, hence, their image. The changes in the logo, however, are not so huge to warrant an entire rebrand, but they are significant enough to be noticed by any person with a keen eye for design.

The logo retained its original form of being the wood mark type but now with a sans-serif typeface. This has given it more modern looks. Additionally, it now appears more playful than before. The new look also uses softer color tones compared to the initial ones which appeared to be slightly rougher for the looks.

Why did Google update their logo?

For a big company like Google to decide to update its logo, there have to be strong and concrete reasons behind it. Logos are the brand drivers for such big organizations hence they are at the core of every undertaking by the company. Google has been around for decades now, and it has gone through a lot of changes.

The company no longer offer online search services alone but has branched and now has an interest in other industries as well. The way users interact with technology has also changed a lot since the company launched.

Presently, Google is running a huge collection of sites, services, and applications. The need to update the logo was thus driven by the fact that the company has evolved, and it is no longer what people used to know fifteen years ago. The logo has also been updated to accommodate the needs of the current browsing behaviors such as the use of mobile phones as well as other mobile devices in accessing the internet. So, what makes the new Google Logo special?

The first major change in 16 years

Big companies are known to rebrand each time they introduce a new product line or new services. This is done so that the new looks, including the logo, can reflect the changes happening in the company. However, this was not the case with Google, given that it has introduced a plethora of services in the last sixteen years without any significant update on the logo. It now manufactures wearable technologies, cars and also involved in global mapping amongst other things. But despites all these, the recent logo update was the major one in the last sixteen years. This is a show of some nerve and resilience in the brand as it was able to introduce new products and services without really affecting the image of the company.

The new logo is simplified

The new Google logo looks more modern and simpler compared to the previous ones. The logo is in fact as simple as ABC123 and it can be seen and even drawn by anyone. It is a perfect demonstration of minimalist design, one with less style but full of substance because it has managed to retain its distinctiveness and uniqueness in the industry.

Cross Platform Compatibility

The internet has evolved a lot in the last sixteen years. Back then, only desktop and laptops could be used to access the internet by the majority. But presently, the internet is virtually everywhere and so is Google. The new logo has been designed to be display on all the devices used in accessing the internet without any adjustments or changes.

With the old logo, however, Google had to adjust to make the logo visible in the mobile devices and what users saw in the mobile devices was slightly different from what was seen on the desktop devices. However, the new Google logo is now compatible across all the devices, and the users will be treated to the same logo irrespective of what they are using to access the internet.

New Levels in Material Design

Google has been raising the bar with its focus on Material Design language, and this has been fully realized in the new Google logo. What you see in the new logo is nothing special but a flat and a six character logo with simple strokes. This is also evident in the company logos for other products such as Maps, News, Translate, and Google Plus. A closer look at the logos will reveal to you that they all have a white insignia at the top corners of the logo. This is material design in action.

The new Logo is Bytes Less

The other special thing about the new Google logo is the fact that it is smaller regarding bytes compared to the previous one. The new logo is only 305 bytes instead of 14,000 bytes of the older one.

Though mobile bandwidth is measured in gigabytes and this might seem like a small change, not everyone in the world who uses Google services is not guaranteed to have the same data plan hence this is a new development for very many people. With this, the company can now reach more and more people and continue to enhance and grow their brand.

6 Popular Apps with Great Logo Designs

High quality apps with a poor logo is likely to fail to reach its full potential because app icon is one of those elements that make users decide whether or not to download a given app. Since logos are used to communicate with the target audience, if an app logo fails to convince the potential user that the app contained therein is of good value, then the user may just rubbish it aside and never install it on their devices. This is why app logo design is such a serious matter for the final success of any type of app.

There is a plethora of mobile phone apps with great icon designs currently in use. Presented here, however, are the top app logos for the iOS devices. The fact that these apps have the best app logo designs is no wonder given that they also rank as some of the top mobile apps for iOS devices. They include the following-:

Pudding.to

This is a photo sharing application with one of the sweetest app logos in Apple Store. Gone are the days when the very basic and traditional cameras were used in photography but the logo of this icon does a good job taking you back in time by featuring a grey traditional camera. Despite this, it still manages to look fresh, new and very welcoming.

Instagram

It is no doubt that Instagram is one of the biggest social media websites at the moment, with millions of active users. Being that the predominant activity that takes place in this social site is photo sharing, there are hundreds of mobile applications dedicated to sharing photos and images in Instagram. But for an app to stand out amongst the hundreds, it must provide real value to the users.
This doesn’t refer to the functionalities alone, but also it must be beautifully designed, complete with an awesome logo. This is exactly what you get with the InstaGenius App. Its app logo design brings together a vintage camera and modern printing technology to give it an Apple-eque twist with a great sense of personality. It’s personally one of my favorite app logo designs.

Well

With the Well App, you get powers to manipulate your social lists in various ways using the iPhone. The app logo design for this application features an image of the traditional wells reminiscent of the Roman Empire. It comes with awesome shades of green and blue to create very powerful visual effects. Looking at it for the first time will remind you that there is a font wisdom waiting to be tapped out there so that you can share it with your lists in the social media. It can’t also be disputed that this is one of the app logo designs out there.

Wunderlist

You may have heard of Wunderlist if you are keen on task management apps. It is a free app that helps you in personal organization so that you can manage your tasks, prioritizing them from the most important to the least important ones.
